I understand there are sensibilities here, but my question is a sincere one to provoke thought; does it not bother the Christian that these manuscripts which are used to reconstruct the modern-day Bible are being discovered in rubbish heaps?
Christian scholar, C.E. Hill, in his book 'Who Chose the Gospels' writes:
When speaking of papyrus discoveries this exotic-sounding place called Oxyrhynchus (it's meaning in Greek is as odd as it sounds in English: city of the sharp-nosed fish) must take pride of place. Excavations of the ancient Oxyrhynchus rubbish heaps conducted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, mainly by two Oxford scholars, Bernard P. Grenfell and Arthur S. Hunt, have provided the world with about 500,000 pieces of papyrus to study - only about a tenth of which have so far been published. It is from Oxyrhynchus, more than from any other single place, that the flow of once-lost New Testament papyri has come. Scholars are now able to work with a total of 126 papyrus fragments of New Testament texts from the first several centuries of Christian history (along with over 5,000 later, parchment manuscripts), at least fifty-four of which were discovered at Oxyrhynchus. [Who Chose the Gospels?, C.E Hill, Oxford University Press, 2010, p13-14]

Br. Snow, can you do a post on refuting Quranists?
ReplyDeleteMuslim Zeal,
ReplyDeleteYou should probably get your information on Islam from competent scholars. Yahya has a very poor track record even when speaking on his own religion. I mean, really...the guy didn't even know the basics of tawhid when we last discussed the topic. It was so bad that he had to erase the entire post. I was embarrassed for him. So even though I am not a Muslim, I sincerely counsel you to look to scholars of your religion who can deal with your question in a way that does justice to it from a Muslim perspective.
Dear Rogers,
ReplyDeleteI have known Br. Snow for more than six years and based on our frequent discussions he appears to be quite well-versed in the matter, despite the fact he acknowledges he's no scholar. Do give the man a chance -- he is one of the very few who does show a rare vigor in online apologetics. You should at least give him credit in that respect.
Being known for six years and having a lot of vigor is far from commensurate with what ought to be true of a person that you would look to on such matters. He just doesn't know his stuff, makes things up regularly, spends more time slandering people than actually doing apologetics, and, truth be told, his vigor is almost non-existent or at least is not anything to speak of since he has never debated anyone and to all appearances never will debate anyone ever.
ReplyDeleteWise counsel can be offered but it is up to you what you will do with it. Be careful.
Anthony Rogers

Do you remember these sick statements? I think you and RM and SS have been reading too much Biblical fantasies lately.
Is there anything substantive than mocking and personal insults against Br. Yahya by these two on-line missionaries?
ReplyDeleteNo wonder the modern day Bible is in the sorry state since it was based from the material considered as rubbish by early christians ..
Poor Ijaz. His arguments are so bankrupt and his psychological state is so fragile from admitted abuse by his father that he thinks the idiom I used, i.e. "gird up your loins," was a threat to rape him. See a psychologist.
