When suicide bombers first emerged in the Muslim world, borrowing a page from Marxist-influenced Hindu political movements of Southeast Asia, traditional scholars condemned the innovation. But soon, extremist Muslims began quoting Qur'anic verses and hadith to support violent measures as a legitimate response to intolerable social conditions and oppression.
