Asked about the Quranic verse 'And He is with you wherever you are' (57:4), the Companion Ibn Abbas did not take it literally. He explained that this meant God is aware and cognizant of you wherever you are. Similarly, a Hadith describing how God 'draws near to the believer by an arm's length' is explained by Companions as referring to the nearness of His mercy as opposed to physical movement.
