Numbers 31 and Deuteronomy 21 - Sam Shamoun

Now I understand this anti-Islam apologist, Sam Shamoun, has been denounced as having a double-mind by Pulpit and Pen and James White refuses to recommend him whilst considering him as somebody who "has lost it" BUT his views, if consistently applied, seem to indicate he believes Jesus singled out virgins in Numbers 31 to be raped.

Sam Shamoun: Numbers 31 and Deuteronomy 21

This video is also uploaded here

Numbers 31:

4 Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle. 15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.
Deuteronomy 21:

10 “When you go out to war against your enemies, and the Lord your God gives them into your hand and you take them captive, 11 and you see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you desire to take her to be your wife, 12 and you bring her home to your house, she shall shave her head and pare her nails. 13 And she shall take off the clothes in which she was captured and shall remain in your house and lament her father and her mother a full month. After that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.

An Invitation for Tony Gurule of Ratio Christi To Investigate Doubts About Trinitarian Christian Theology

A few colleagues and I have recently been engaging Tony Gurule of Ratio Christi on matters pertaining to Christian theology.

I want to bring up 3 points that have stood out in some of the conversation I've been involved in and/or seen.

Distinction between Being and Person, in the Bible?

Firstly, I did ask Tony Gurule for a BIBLICAL distinction between being and personhood as Trinitarians believe God is One Being and 3 Persons.

Tony could not furnish such a distinction. In that case, I would say to Tony and other Trinitarians that you are getting this distinction between being and personhood form Church Tradition - thus not being true to the concept of Sola Scriptura (drawing from Scripture alone). Tony would argue it's was philosophy and not church tradition. However, this is where the semantics come in.

The distinction is not taught by the Bible - even experienced Trinitarian apologists like James White cannot come up with a Biblical distinction.

Where did the distinction come from? And what is it?

Tony is right, it's philosophy. I'm right too, it's church tradition. It can be both. It is both :)

Christians from the 4th century onwards began to develop their philosophy about God in argument with those they deemed to be heretics and in interaction with material in the Bible - the NT especially. So the philosophy of 3 persona came about through the Church. It's Church tradition.

Now Trinitarian Christians have a framework (a philosophy aka Church/Creedal tradition) with which they view the Old Testament and New Testament.

The Catholics are upfront in admitting to Church tradition, evangelicals such as Tony Gurule are reticent to do so as they openly profess to be Sola Scriptura.

However, it's obvious Church tradition has influenced Evangelicals. Not only with regards to the philosophy of the Trinity but also with regards to the Books in the NT. The Church decided which books were to be included in the NT canon - that's to say later Church tradition tells evangelicals and other Christians which books are "inspired" - the original authors did not claim inspiration. In some cases there was controversy. For instance, the Book of Revelation was mired in controversy as the Church could not decide whether to include it in canon initially.

My point here, although Church tradition seems like a dirty concept in certain evangelical communities, there's no escaping evangelicals are prone to Church Tradition when it comes to the canon and the Trinity belief.

Trinitarians may be told the Trinity is clearly deduced from the Bible but if it was so clearly taught in the Bible and so easily to come to through exegesis (rather than eisegesis) then why were there centuries of squabbling - sometimes vicious squabbling over these matters?

Can Jesus sin according to Christianity?

Tony Gurule said he believed Jesus could not sin:

I personally do not believe that He was able to sin (from the human nature of course).

Side note: There are differing opinions on this topic though. The two terms are impeccability and peccability. Some people believe that Jesus was not able to sin, and He did not, but other people believe that He was able to sin, but He did not. So, although the two groups differ on the "could," both groups believe that He did not.

Hold on, Tony and other Christians are in opposition to Matthew. Matthew does not appear to have the same belief - he seemingly believes Jesus could be tempted (thus inferring he believed Jesus could sin):

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. Mat 4:1

The same applies to Mark, he too seemingly believed Jesus could be tempted and thus presumably could sin:

and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him. Mark 1:13

How can one who cannot sin be tempted? It seems authors of Mark and Matthew had different views to Tony and other evangelicals.

Heresy: separating the two natures

Lastly, I'd like to raise Tony Gurule's awareness to his flirtation with Nestorianism.

Tony seemingly separated the idea of Jesus' dual natures. He stated "the human nature is completely distinct and separate".

Perhaps Tony was unaware, in separating the two natures one falls into the ancient "heresy" of Nestorianism. Admittedly, Nestorius took it to the level of believing Jesus was two persons but Tony's "separating" of the two natures is akin to how Nestorius came to the view Jesus was two persons. Christian theologians believe the two natures are actually unified. Here's RC Sproul warning against separating the two natures:

We can distinguish the two without separating them. But when the human nature perspires, it is still united to a divine nature that does not perspire. [What is the Trinity, RC Sproul, Loc397]

The teaching do not mix nor separate the natures of Jesus is one which Trinitarian theologians use to keep their flock away from Eutyches' monophysite understanding and Nestorius' Nestorianism.

A message to Trinitaian Christians from a Muslim

If you'rea Trinitarian, I suspect you will have a few doubts about Trinitarian theology. Explore those doubts.

Ponder upon the Trinity dilemma in this video. This is a powerful point to get people asking questions about the Trinity belief.

The Trinity Dilemma

Historically, the early Church Fathers did not believe in the Trinity concept.

Speaking of the pre-Nicenes, New Testament scholar Robert M. Grant perspicaciously explains that "Christology of [early Christian apologists..is essentially subordinationist. The Son is always subordinate to the Father who is the one God of the Old Testament." [Dr Edgar G. Foster]

Just to show how late the Trinitarians formed the final formulation of the Trinity doctrine, as late as 380 AD the Church still had not unanimously agreed to include the Holy Spirit as a divine being. Through Gregory of Nazianzen, as late as 380, we see there was a running debate as to what to believe about the Holy Spirit. How can there have been a Trinity teaching passed down through apostles concerning the Holy Spirt if Christians were undecided on what to believe about the Holy Spirit?

"Gregory of Nazianzum could still say in 380, Some of our theologians consider the Holy Spirit to be a certain mode of the Divine energy, others a creature of God, others God Himself. Others say they do not know which opinion they ought to accept, out of reverence for the Scriptures which have not clearly explained this point."
[Sourced from Patrick Navas]

It's well known Jesus' statements were not of a Trinitarian but what you may be unaware of, Paul and Peter made statements which seemingly refute the idea of the Trinity:

In 1 Cor 8:6 Paul spells out the identity of God and identifies Him as the Father:

yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.

In Acts 2:36 Peter is purported to have said:

"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah."

David Wood: Yahya Snow Censors and Conceals 'Evidence'?

If this video does not play, this video can also be found here

This is really odd. I only came across David's response to my work in countering their thighing hoax  last night after I was on my phone trying to search for one of my posts on a hoax conversion via Google.

It's dated 2014, David Wood is having a testosterone-fuelled blast at me. Playing the big man while trying to belittle the other guy. Typical internet shenanigans. Sad.

OK, here's the serious bit, he's accusing me of concealing evidence Prophet Muhammad 'thighed' Aisha. Erm, we've been through this before. David claimed before Aisha moved in with Prophet Muhammad p, the Prophet would 'thigh' her (intercrurual sex) because she was too young for actual sex. The guy just made that up. See the video above. He was exposed on that a few years ago. He never responded to it back then but all of a sudden we see this post which really does not prove his case.

Firstly, a 'Fatwa' is not evidence for anything. It just means opinion. To have evidence the Prophet did something you need a narration (Hadith). A sound one at that. The local imam down the road can give fatwas on whether it's permissibile to listen to music, use a fridge, wear Nike trainers or whatever. It's a legal verdict. Not historical evidence about Prophet Muhammad p.

I had a look at his link, I couldn't find the narration the website was quoting. So, for the time being, I cannot delve into the Arabic, if it the narration from Ibn Majah exists. However, notice the "narration" does not mention Aisha and it does not mention anything about pre-puberty. Quite how Wood thinks this validates his claims is beyond me. It doesn't. Why wait all these years and produce something so insignificant that doesn't even touch on the claims YOU made?

If I have time, I may look into all this further and produce another blog post as that crowd seem to be trying to throw some dust in the air to distract people from their unsubstantiated claims and deceptions of the past. Sad.

Censorship

I am also being accused of censorship. These folk have a screen shot of some comments that were deleted. I'm not sure if it's from my blog but there's a discussion in the comments on his blog and it seems like it's not just David who is accusing me of censorship (of links to this thighing fatwa) so I guess some comments were deleted, unless David made a sock account or two. I honestly don;t remember. As far as I recall, this is the first time I've seen this post from David and this fatwa webiste which does not prove anything. Perhaps I thought somebody was spamming. On newer posts I close off comments generally, they are time consuming, but the ancient posts on this blog have comments enabled so I assume, if what they must be referring to an older blog post. Whatever the case, I have no recollection of this. Clearly it was a big thing over at the AM blog :)

For anybody interested, David's post can be foundhere. All the stuff on his blog has been refuted. I always find it interesting that he censors and then he makes a big deal out of me apparently censoring (which I have no recollection of). Happy David? It's on my blog, now how about you start allowing my comments and links on your blog, worried your donors will follow Negeen Mayel through the exit door? BTW, your wife recently censored one of my vids in the Acts 17 group. Yep one of my vids was posted there and soon removed. What have you folk got to hide?

PS I found your belittlement odd considering at least 3 contributors of your blog (including yourself) have asked to debate me while your buddy Shamoun regularly throws out debate challenges my way. Why debate a fly while you boys are giants? Or is it really a case of you boys knowing this website and my vids have harmed your credibility in the eyes of your supporters? Cutting through all the childish insults, it's obvious that I'm not the fly he tries to paint me as while David and his associates aren't the giants they style themselves as. More humility and realism is required.

For the record, I challenge you to a debate. Any topic, you can choose. As long as you agree to reciprocate and accept a topic from me. We'll have the debate on YouTube. The place where falsehood and spin perishes :) The place where so many have seen the Answering Muslims team stumble.
OK, I'm out. If anybody wants more history on the thighing stuff and more info on it, just search for the word on this blog and you will get a ton of posts on it. Have a good day. Peeeace.

The Laziest Debate Review of Inamullah Mumtaz - Jonathan McLatchie on "Is Jesus God"

Just read the review and walk on with a smile

Personally I doubt Inamullah Mumtaz is a 'sheikh' and I doubt Jonathan McLatchie has finished his PhD either. I doubt these titles were added to these chaps at their behest. ABN/Trinity channel seems to have an inferiority complex. CALM DOWN...people will still watch even if you introduce your guests as who they ACTUALLY are. Again, I can only think they are being influenced by their low-opinion of their audience (to be honest, I think their audience does carry a number of unsophisticated types as attested by some of the callers I've had the displeasure of listening to over the years - oh and while we are at it some of the guests too, yes you are one of them Usama Dakdok) . They also pulled this stunt with Ijaz Ahmad, they made him an 'imam'. They've done it to Jonathan before too.

Oh and as if a fella having a PhD in a science subject and somebody who is a qualified scholar in Islam is going to lend more credibility to a  debate largely based on the New Testament text. THINK!!!

Stop this small man complex. It's not clever. It's insulting to the audience. It's dishonest too.

Bassim and Samar Goriel, sort it out!

Debate Review

Jonathan McLatchie's two-fold argument:

-Sayings in the NT which attest to Jesus being deity

-Disciples believed Jesus claimed to be divine

One of the problems in debates of this nature is folks taking the text in the NT as authoritative. How many people do not question the validity and authority of the text they are using in the debate and thus end up offering a one-dimensional debate?

Somebody should have just thrown their hands up in the air and said we are using texts adulterated and/or produced by a bunch of liars, ignoramuses and unauthorized folk. Why even bother trying to prove anything from this set of texts, these texts should not play a role in anybody's theology never mind people entrusting their salvation on these texts...

...and then stormed off!

Nobody did that [surprised??] so let's look at some of the points proffered

A contrived argument  from Matthew 11 and Malachi 3

Jonathan put these two together to claim John the Baptist was sent to pave the way for God. Nothing to see here folks, if  John the Baptist really thought Jesus was God, then he would have told his followers to leave him and follow Jesus p (as put by Zakir......... Hussain)

Jonathan to his credit appears to recognise the material in these books is of varying reliability so he offers an argument propping up the reliability of Matthew 11. Has Jonathan thought, both Matthew and Luke were copying off another liar (seems as though a ton of them were operating around the NT) or somebody who just passed on unverified material?

The peril of not knowing who you're getting your material from! Jonathan would not cite a research paper whose author could not be verified in an academic setting so why the double standard here? Having said that, even if Matthew 11 was reliable, as shown earlier it does not teach Jesus was divine - John the Baptist did not think Jesus was divine..

I' already getting tired and grouchy. I have the rest of Jonathan's OS to go through and Inamullah Mumtaz's material. Who'd want to be me right now :(

OK, I skipped some, Jonathan is now talking about the Son of Man title. Did he learn anything from Shabir Ally? Here's a video on the Son of Man, there's a clip in there of Shabir going through various interpretations of that title - I believe in front of Jonathan (COME ON Jonathan it's been explained!!!). Watch it...trust me, it's an easier watch than this debate :)

Fair play to Jonathan, he again demonstrates he is aware of the problems concerning the reliability of texts from the 'Gospels' (yes, it's plural, they have FOUR, 4, Arba3, Vier,) thus he argues for the authenticity of this alleged self-attribution by Jesus p.

Yiiikes! Jonathan's mentioning Psalm 110. The moment you realise you don't have a video to link to
:(   I haven't looked into this so will leave it. I may do a post/video on it in the future...send any useful material to my email, thx.

Let's just skip to stuff related to Jonathan's second point...

He hasn't left much time for his second argument, he must have thought his first one warranted the bulk of the time or perhaps he thinks this second one is the weaker of the two...???

Uh, Jesus' disciples confirmed his deity??? Or did he say affirmed? Either way, same difference!

That's not true.I have video to go with that assertion!  Here's a Blue Peter number, did the disciples think Jesus was God. In this video you can quickly learn Mary (Jesus' mother pbut), the disciples and John the Baptist did not think he was God. Tip, if you watched the first link...it's the same one ;)

Hold on he's talking about the Quran. ears prick up. Time to get more serious. (by the way Jonathan, you do realise words like 'antithesis' and 'contention' are just going to flyyyyy over a lot of these folks' heads. COME ONE you've heard some of the callers on that show, a few Christian Prince types knocking about who are from Eastern Christian communities with a tribal hatred of Muslims - imagine! Save your big words for another time.)

Jonathan mate, your accent is not foreign to me but fella slooooooow it down. You're not in a race with Usain Bolt. That stuff about Paul etc was just a blur. I'm not going to bother going back. As for Paul, I think this will be of interest as according to this he believes he only has one God, the Father:

yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.  [1 Cor 8:6]

I'm really rushing through my homework now. Somebody slap me on the wrist. I've reached the half way line. Bring on Inamullah Mumtaz from the QDCI!!!

I skipped and heard Inamullah say they can never prove Jesus is God. Great. Bravo.10/10!

Ooh, Inamullah wasn't impressed by Jonathan Mclatchie's OS, it's all interpretation and philosophy according to him. Zoooming forward.

Inamullah: If Jesus was God, he would say so. Inamullah repeats this throughout his bits I've looked at as of now - he really wants to drive this message home to the Eastern Christians who have a tribal hatred of Muslims. May I add, I'm not entirely sure they will understand Inamullah either...the accent may be a hurdle for that crowd. Good thing I'm writing my lazy review!!!

He also mentions the Shema. OK, fair point but it's all kind of overlooking this Trinitarian's stance. Trinitarians will say they agree with the Shema and the trinity idea was revealed in the 'inter-testamental period'.

Chromosomes? Chimps and Humans? 46 and 48?

OK, I'm going to skip this but his argument is you're either man or God. You cannot be both. But Inamullah, these folks believe in the incarnation and hypostatic union ideas. Youre better off if you discuss these, fella. Touch on them at least. Next time, show these ideas to be ideas from church tradition rather than ideas based on Sola Scriptura and/or authoritative teachings.

I don't think saying their beliefs are pantheism is accurate. It's a bit of a difficult one to put it in a box, maybe pagan-like elements? I mean, Jonathan believes a man who wrestled with Jacob in the Old Testament is God and Trinitarians believe a dove in the NT was God as well as a man in the NT being God. Getting tired now, oh yeah some of them also believe an angel in the OT was God too.

It's weird but really, how can they say with confidence that they don't believe a man down the road  is not God or a bird flying over head is not God based on their theology? They've set the precedent and others still, yes you Jonathan, push the envelope further in insisting an angel and/or man in the OT was God incarnate too.

Just out of interest, how would a Trinitarian such as Jonathan McLatchie go about proving a man in 2016 is not God incarnate?

For the Muslims, we know God is not a man and God is like no other. We have no problem in rejecting that idea outright as absurd. Same with the Jews. Whilst the Trinitarians have already gone beyond the limit and announced a bird, a man and an angel were God at some stage.

So how can they confidently declare a man walking down the street is not God? A bird in the sky is not God?

They made their bed with the incarnaton idea/s and now they are laying in it whilst Muslims and Jews are trying to wake them up.

Their basic theology is a mess. It's a mess because it's false.

OK, I'm not bothering with the rest. I'm out. Hurray!

Right kids, this is how to do this debate.

Whack on a recording of Shabir Ally or Zakir Hussain or IJAZ AHMAD :) and then walk off

OR if you want to do it yourself start off with some verses from their text showing Jesus was not God.

Find some text from the OT showing God is not a man.

And then build from there, perhaps start talking about the lack of reliability of these texts and talk about the ideas of the trinity and incarnation being ideas read into the text rather than being a product of  pure exegesis thus showing these are ideas from church tradition.

OR if you really want to do something radical...try that huge chunk highlighted in yellow at the beginning of this review, go on you know you want to...

Night, night. Looking forward to the big match tomoz...LIVERPOOL against Man United.

Nota Bene one more thing, to Jonathan and Trinitarians out there. Look into matters deeper. Please. I know I'm playing around in this review but there's a serious undertone to this. Let me get deadly serious here, why believe a man is God? I know why you folks do it, it's because you're emotionally attached to the vicarious atonement idea. Look, God does not need to send anybody to die for your sins or anybody else's sins. Sure, we all have done horrible things that we would not even dare admit to our  colleagues, friends, wives and children...but God does not think like a human being. Whereas a human may hold some grudge against us and drag up something he/she said they had forgiven us for years after the event....God is not like that. He can forgive us no matter what we did and we remain forgiven...sincere repentance is required.

To believe God needs to have a 'son' to die for our sins is beyond a primitive understanding of God. It's a transgression. In fact, a rabbi I listen to likens it to the pagan practices of sacrificing virgins (who represented purity, innocence). Move beyond these ideas.

We must all strive to love God with all our might and heart. This cannot be achieved if one is dividing their love by wrongly loving a man as God.

Jesus never taught this idea. Rummaging around in the NT texts and playing games of chess with your theology and salvation is not the way any of us should behave. A quote comes into mind from a James Dunn book I'm going through, he's quoting Philo who comments on the first commandment:

Let us, then, engrave deep in our hearts this as the first and most sacred commandments, to acknowledge and honour  one God who is above all, and let the idea that gods are many never even reach the ears of the man whose rule of life is to seek for the truth in purity and guilelessness.

Please think about these this. PLEASE.

Review of Shabir Ally Getting Ambushed by Shamoun and Dakdok

In one of Imam Shabir Ally's debates with David Wood there was a farce of a QAsession  which just appeared to be a pre-planned gang-up on Shabir.  I want to offer a few comments on the exchanges that took place between Shabir and Sam Shamoun as well as Usama Dakdok. It's easy to criticise after the event as hindsight is 20/20 - I understand there are mitigating circumstances but there is criticism levelled at all concerned.

Firstly, what was that farce? A set-up. Shabir, did not bargain for such sneaky tactics on the part of the ABN crew to try and help David Wood. ABN even had the pics of their questioners conveniently handy, their ABN affiliated apologists were allowed much more time to grill Shabir than other questioners and Sam Shamoun got two bites at the cherry (unprecedented in debates?). Sam appeared to have colluded with David prior to the debate as David conveniently had the sources Sam was referencing in his Q.

Contrast that farce with Shabir's polite but forceful interjection in the QA session in his debate with Jonathan McLatchie to prevent a Muslim questioner overstepping the rules of fairness in debate.

Those ABN folk could learn something from Shabir about fairness.

Shabir rattled

This seems like a first. A rattled Shabir. Dakdok and Shamoun threw enough pressure, insult and antagonism for Shabir to veer away from his customary calm and collected manner. Shabir's debate challenge to Dakdok was born out of frustration and perhaps even an impulse to put Dakdok under similar scrutiny and pressure. Shabir was feeling the pressure.

His acceptance of Shamoun's debate challenge was another sign of Shabir being rattled. Accepting a challenge from a person one seemingly had no interest in debating for the last decade further suggests Shabir had departed from his calculated self. This was a Shabir we had not seen before.

Having said that, Shabir, in now expected to try and make these debates happen. Shabir made his bed...

I don't know how Shabir concluded Dakdok's diatribe against Islam suggested he was a debater but nevertheless there could be some good that comes out of Shabir acting on impulse. Dakdok was hailed by David Horowitz as a scholar. He's also part of the Geller and Spencer cabal. This is the best opportunity Shabir has of addressing the type of audience which is all about demonizing Muslims. That angry mob of Christian Zionists who are united more by politics than faith. Folk who believe President Obama is a Muslim (of which Dakdok is one). It's a different crowd to those Shabir has had the pleasure of addressing. The Shabir that countered Dave Hunt is required for this mission. Welcome back to that Shabir!

As for Sam, Shabir is clearly not in touch with Shamoun's polemics. How much Shabir can cram before a debate is not known but nobody on this side of the fence wants to see Shabir decide to debate a defensive topic with Shamoun. Those topics are vast due to the plethora of Hadith and Tafsir literature thus it's a task for folk in touch with the latest polemics out there nevermind  somebody who is not au fait with Shamoun's arguments. Besides Shabir's strength and experience is overwhelmingly in attacking Christianity. On top of this, Shabir's approach of questioning the authenticity of certain Ahadith  could cause  more confusion than clarity. It also rubs the Islamophobic Christian crowd up the wrong way. I believe this is one of the reasons why they were so quick to denounce Shabir as a liar in his misjudgement of David Wood's alleged 'sarcasm'.

Shabir will struggle and may even offer more confusion than clarity if he adopts an approach similar to that employed in this exchange. Shabir seemed quite unfamiliar with Shamoun's arguments - which was odd as Wood borrows from Shamoun thus one would expect Shabir to have been more prepared in offering a concise, clear and non-controversial rebuttal. In truth Shabir's moved on. This is not the Shabir of 15 years ago who would tussle with the polemics of folk of Shamoun's ilk. It will be a car crash of a debate in my opinion. Just look at the interactions between the two here and the now infamous tussle over whether one was misquoting or not. Car crash stuff.

Undervaluing oneself

Shabir undervalues himself, He's the best known and most respected Muslim apologist/debater yet it seems as though he does not know his own value. Think about it, name me the best known Jewish apologists. Perhaps you will say Rabbi Tovia Singer and Rabbi Schmuley. These folk come at a premium. For a Christian to get into the debate arena with Judaism's best known apologists that Christian has to have standing, mainstream popularity and scholarship. I also suspect those guys don't come cheap either!

Contrast this with Islam's best known apologist, Dr Shabir Ally. Shabir recently debated a guy who, with all due respect, was pretty much unknown in Muslim-Christian interactions. Jonathan McLatchie. Then it was Wood - a man who needed to debate Shabir more than Shabir needed to debate him. Shabir decides to debate this guy 6 times? Was it six or more? So Shabir has debated a guy who peddles internet lies such as the Necrophilia lie more than Licona and WLC put together. And now Dakdok and Shamoun. Who next? Are folk going to set raffles up in churches to see who debates him next :)

Shabir is co-authoring a book with James R. White (does the 'R' stand for reformed?). Why not a stand alone book? I'd buy it. A shed-load of Muslims would. Personally, I'd rather not give my cash to James White though!nIn any case, is there really much more Shabir-White can say that they have not already said in their numerous interactions in past debates.

This is where Muslim debaters could certainly learn from their Jewish counterparts. Don't undersell yourself.

A note for Christians: Shabir is not Islam's best apologist. In my opinion Dr Yasir Qadhi is perhaps the best English speaking apologist out there.  Bassam Zawadi and Waqar Cheema are all better at countering polemics and dealing with the sources. Sami Zaatari is better in handling defensive positions in debates. And let's not forget...

All debaters have their strengths and weaknesses. Shabir is more accustomed to tackling Christian subjects - that's where his expertise and experience lies. Keep that in mind before pronouncing some sort of victory.

Good-Bad fruit argument

Shamoun's first polemic is an old one which has an easy refutation to it. Shamoun coupled Mat7:16 with the Sharia's period of non-prohibition of Mutah, he then proceeds to call this the bad fruit of Prophet Muhmmad (p) - thus using it as an argument against Prophet Muhammad's prophethood.

Shabir went to the well of questioning the hadith - when he really did not need to and nor should have. We must remember a huge percentage of the Christian viewers on ABN would  be hardcore Islamophobes and/or those who have been regularly subjected to Islamophobic propaganda - including the nefarious propaganda that Muslims can lie about their religion (a distortion of the concept of Taqiya). Those people would have had nothing, absolutely nothing, from Shabir's answer to alleviate such suspicions. Perhaps Shabir's method of going to the well of questioning Ahadith which are in the more trusted collections would only have reinforced their misconceptions of Muslims.

Hindsight is 20/20 but it would have been better if Shabir had answered by appealing to the piece meal method of Revelation and that there were things which we know to be sinful now which were initially not prohibited by Islam immediately due to the nature of Revelation - including alcohol consumption, beating slaves, prostituting slave women, pre-marital sex as well as temporary marriage.

These matters can only be forbidden upon the Revelation of the Quran and/or an express statement from Prophet Muhammad p.

So for alcohol consumption to be first banned, I believe it would have happened at the time of the Revelation of Quran 5:90. And likewise for the prohibition of maids being forced into prostitution (Quran 24:33), prohibition of beating slaves I believe would have been the time Quran 4:36 was revealed or a saying of Prophet Muhammad p on this issue (whichever came earlier).

As for Mutah (temporary marriage), this was part of the pre-Islamic Arab society and was actually one of the forms of marriage in that society. This is said to have been prohibited by Prophet Muhammad in 7AH. There is Hadith literature to show this.

The point here is, there were times during Islam where there was no explicit prohibition of things we clearly know to be sins now. Does that mean Prophet Muhammad p was producing bad fruit? Of course not, we must look at the completion of the formation of the religion which was revealed through Prophet Muhammad p. That's only fair.

If we do this we see Sam's argument falls flat on its face. In fact, if Shabir adopted this approach he could have turned the tables around and moved from a defensive position to an offensive position in t he interaction to highlight the inconsistency and then even move on to really get stuck in to Sam.

Christians have a similar concept for things which they would now call sins being allowed in the OT, they believe Jesus p fulfilled the Law and thus only then matters such as  beating the slave to near death was forbidden [Exodus 21:20-21] as well as chopping a woman's hand off for a low blow on her husband's assailant [Deut 25:11-12].

Would Sam say Jesus p brought bad fruit because according to Sam's view, there was a point at which Jesus did not forbid such actions and folk were allowed to beat slaves to near death and chop a woman's hand off for defending her husband? These are now considered sins in Sam's Christian view.

Shabir could have gone further still and used the point of alcohol prohibition. Alcohol is a poison which even in moderation is a risk factor for cancer. Prophet Muhammad came with a Revelation which forbade this yet Christians believe their Scripture did not forbid this. Thus, Sam's argument of bad fruit backfires and he ends up arguing against Paul and his own Scripture!

Shabir, if he wanted to be even more adventurous, could have used the Nadir Ahmed argument (yes, Nadir Ahmed!) - which I have never seen refuted by a Christian. IIRC Sam in his last desperate  attempt tried to refute it by claiming Islam did not forbid alcohol consumption - an obvious fail on Sam's part.

And if he wanted to add more on the bad fruit idea he could have totally flummoxed Shamoun by presenting the stats concerning premarital sex - Muslims have the least premarital sex out of all major faith groups and as Pastor Joseph Najm learned here 80% of evangelical Christian youth engage in premarital sex

Shabir could have asked about the fruit of Paul. If Shabir wanted to get Christians thinking how about talking bombs; Christians are the only group to have decimated innocent people through nukes  something which  Christian apologist James White was shamelessly caught condoning here

Oh yeah, there's plenty to talk about when it comes to countering Shamoun's bad fruit argument. I sense a Shabir of 15 years ago would have buried Shamoun in a ton of rotten apples, banana peel and pineapple heads.

An opportunity missed.

Like I say, hindsight is 20/20.

Hadith of sins being put on Christians

I can see why Shabir automatically questioned the authenticity of this hadith (as it seemingly contradicts with the Quran) yet Shabir was not aware of the Hadith so it does not appear he was prepared for such a polemical approach (further highlighting how Shabir has moved away from dealing with polemics). Perhaps if he was aware he would have went down the route of mentioning Imam Nawawi who did not teach it to be literal. I think this would have been sufficient to take the wind out of Sam's sails, in showing that early Muslims did not believe the Hadith in the way Sam was representing it

To further show Shamoun's understanding to be flawed would have been to highlight the fact the Hadith in this case refers to a certain group of Muslims - not all Muslims. Some Muslims go to Heaven straight away - these people would have sinned yet they are forgiven without having their sins transferred onto others. The same applies to Muslims who go to Hell before being released through the Mercy of Allah (swt) - their sins are not transferred on to others.

Answering via this type of approach would have perhaps been better for the audience. Less confusion. Less controversy. Less frustration on the part of the Islamophobes.

It would have also quickly allowed Shabir on the offensive to talk about things he's really good at, such as pointing at problems in the Christian concept of atonement.

Final thoughts on Sam and Shabir

Shabir is a lovely man. I really feel these two should not interact. Just look at the division and argumentation the recent interactions between them caused between Muslims and Christians on social media. Many insults were traded. Much unedifying behaviour was exhibited.

It's also not good for Sam's health. I was in Sam's PalTalk class recently and somebody mentioned this Shabir feud is not good for Sam's health. Sam agreed.

Also, Sam upon realising I was in the class (and potentially recording) was very pleasant with me. Sam has it in him to be pleasant and friendly to Muslims. I think in the debate setting, especially with Shabir, Sam is prone to overstep the boundaries of acceptable dialogue.

No matter how bizarre it sounds, the thought of Shabir brings out the worst in Sam for some reason. Bizarre considering Shabir is such a lovely guy. This in turn leads to some Muslims to retaliate as Shabir is much-loved and is seen as a bit of a father-figure to most Muslims involved in online Christian-Muslim dialogue/apologetics.

Shabir's legacy will be him having pretty much single-handedly spearheaded a modernisation of Muslim apologetics here in the West. Arguments from the 80's are being pushed aside in favour of more appropriate and honest arguments.

I want to see Shabir have a flurry at the end of his career marked with respect, dignity, love and orthodoxy . Best not debate Sam. Debating Dakdok would be more beneficial in reaching people who are yet to hear Shabir's presentation.

As for Sam, I think 's important some Muslims try to engage with Sam behind the scenes. Build relationships and understanding so he can greater appreciate Muslims. Perhaps he will relent in his antagonistic stance. Perhaps he will become a Muslim one day. InshaAllah

Hypocritical Jonathan McLatchie on Hygiene in the Bible and Ahadith

I really dislike seeing Christians use double standards in their arguments against Muslim texts (Quran and Ahadith) i.e. using one standard to attack Islamic texts all the while not applying the same standard to their own text (the Bible). Jonathan McLatchie is amongst those Christians who does this. Perhaps he is just unaware of what exactly is in his Bible. McLatchie seemingly borrowed two arguments from a well known internet Christian Islamophobe who has a history of purveying hoaxes and googled lies in his attacks against Islam.

McLatchie also offered a bit of mockery - admittedly he toned it down in comparison to the person whom he may have got the arguments from. Nevertheless, nobody wants to see the other mocking his opponent's text. Jonathan would do well to stop mocking other people's religions.

So what were Jonathan McLatchie's two arguments concerning hygiene? Jonathan presented the Hadith of the Fly and those on water purity. He styles these as 'blunders' of Prophet Muhammad p and mockingly writes 'I, for one, certainly would not want to follow Muhammad’s hygiene advice'.

Sahih Al-Bukhari 537: “Narrated Abu Huraira: The prophet said “If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease.””

Sunan Abu Dawud 67: “I heard that the people asked the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him): Water is brought for you from the well of Buda’ah. It is a well in which dead dogs, menstrual cloths and excrement of people are thrown. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: Verily water is pure and is not defiled by anything.”
Sunan Ibn Majah 520: “It was narrated that Jabir bin Abdullah said: “We came to a pond in which there was the carcass of a donkey, so we refrained from using the water until the Messenger of Allah came to us and said: ‘Water is not made impure by anything.’ Then we drank from it and gave it to our animals to drink, and we carried some with us.””

We have already explained these via video and text. There are perfectly reasonable explanations for these Ahadith. Jonathan clearly does not research whether the material he is copying from Islamophobes has been refuted previously or not.

Response to 'Muhammad on Personal Hygiene (Science and Islam) acts 17 Apologetics

However, this is not a post to cover old ground. This is a post to appeal for consistency and highlight Jonathan's (as well as his source's) flawed methodology.

Jonathan McLatchie, if consistent will reject his Bible and write 'he will not take hygiene advice from Jesus'. IF consistent. I always find this interesting, Christians of Jonathan's ilk claim to have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them yet they operate a standard when discussing other people's faiths which upon application on the Bible ends up attacking the Bible. I'm not sure if Jonathan's intention was to refute himself and his belief that the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians - he did precisely that!

Here are some texts that I simply showcase for the purpose of highlighting Jonathan's lack of consistency. I'm not mocking and nor am I attacking Christian Scripture.

Keep in mind all these texts are believed to be from Jesus (p) according to Jonathan as Jonathan believes in something called a Trinity in which he believes there are three persons in one Godhead (one of these persons is Jesus p according to Trinitarians)

1. Jonathan, if consistent would claim Jesus did not offer hygienic advice with regards to the treatment of people with skin ailments. According to Trinitarians like McLatchie Jesus p taught people to sprinkle bird blood on people suffering from leprosy, sores, swellings, rashes and for defiling skin diseases (various diseases affecting the skin). Refer to Leviticus 14: 1-7 and 14:54-57.

To add to this Leviticus 14:25 teaches smearing the blood of an animal on a person's ear, thumb and on their toe.

Jonathan McLatchie has a problem here as sprinkling blood on a person is not seen as hygienic or safe practice and nor would it be seen as a cure for a skin ailment  - if consistent he will reject the Bible.

2. Jonathan, if consistent would claim Jesus p did not offer hygienic advice concerning mould removal in one's house. According to Trinitarians Jesus p taught people a purification ritual involving the sprinkling of bird blood around a house successfully treated for mould.

Jonathan McLatchie has a problem here as sprinkling blood of any kind (never mind of a bird) in one's house is not seen as a hygienic practice - if consistent he will reject the Bible.

3. Jonathan, if consistent would believes Jesus initially asked a group of people to bake bread using human faeces and then later changed the order to the use of animal faeces in the stead of human faeces. Ezekiel 4:14-15. This seems to be some sort of symbolic defilement.

Jonathan McLatchie, if consistent will call this instruction, which he believes is from Jesus p unhygienic.

4. Jonathan McLatchie believes Jesus taught a woman whose husband has died to spit in the face of the brother of the deceased husband if he refuses to marry her (see Deut 25:5-9). I'm sure Jonathan considers spitting in somebody's face is unhygienic.

Again, if he operates the same standard here as he does when he copies arguments from Islamophobes to attack Islam, he will reject the Bible.

5. Just to round it off I want to add some food for thought on this 5th point. A man who never met Jesus p, Paul of Tarsus, abolished circumcision (Galatians 5). Circumcision is more hygienic and aids with cleanliness and disease prevention. Jonathan McLatchie, will say Paul, offered unhygienic advice (which oddly he believe was inspired by Jesus - although Jesus was circumcised). However, that's not the matter at hand in this post.

In sum, Jonathan McLatchie, if consistent will reject the Bible based on his method of handling Islamic texts. If he's not going to do that then he may retract this line of argumentation (this will remove him from hypocrisy - I'd recommend this option) or alternatively he has another option in remaining in hypocrisy and continue offering such argumentation all the while knowing he is being inconsistent.

The choice is his.

What is evident is the desperation of Christian apologists to grab any old argument to attack Islam, so much so that they don't even think them through critically.

Ridiculous Islamophobic Pastor and 'Ex Muslim' on Homosexuality and Muslims

Here we have it folks. Pastor Joseph Najm and Brother Hamoudy claiming Islam allows and even encourages homosexuality!

This, of course, is blatantly untrue; these two Christians on the 'News and Views' show (via the Aramaic Broadcasting Network)) were obviously wrong; everybody and their dog KNOWS Islam does NOT allow homosexuality and is in fact very strictly against the homosexual act.

I guess the axiomatic truth is no obstacle for Pastor Joseph Najm and Brother Hamoudy - these two Christians make it quite apparent they have no regard for accuracy and truth. They are shown to be the charlatans they clearly are in this embarrassing and spectacular video.

The scholars at Islamonline discuss homosexuality:

The Qur’an tells us the story of the people of Lut (Lot), who deviated from the natural way and got involved in this abnormality, refusing every word of advice from their Prophet Lut. Thus, their destiny was destruction and punishment. Almighty Allah says: “And Lo! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Will ye commit abomination such as no creature ever did before you? Lo! ye come with lust unto men instead of women. Nay, but ye are wanton folk. And the answer of his people was only that they said (one to another): Turn them out of your township. They are folk, forsooth, who keep pure. And We rescued him and his household, save his wife, who was of those who stayed behind. And We rained a rain upon them. See now the nature of the consequence for evil doers!” (Al-A`raf: 80-84)

The eminent Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, states:

“Almighty Allah has prohibited illegal sexual intercourse and homosexuality and all means that lead to either of them. This perverted act is a reversal of the natural order, a corruption of man’s sexuality, and a crime against the rights of females.

The spread of this depraved practice in a society disrupts its natural life pattern and makes those who practice it slaves to their lusts, depriving them of decent taste, decent morals, and a decent manner of living. The story of the people of Prophet Lut as narrated in the Qur’an should be sufficient for us. Lut’s people were addicted to this shameless depravity, abandoning natural, pure, lawful relations with women in the pursuit of this unnatural, foul and illicit practice. That is why their prophet, Lut (peace be upon him) told them: “What! Of all creatures, do you approach males and leave the spouses whom your Lord has created for you? Indeed, you are people transgressing (all limits)!” (Ash-Shu`araa: 165-166)

The strangest expression of these peoples’ perversity of nature, lack of guidance, depravity of morals, and aberration of taste was their attitude toward the guests of Prophet Lut (peace be on him), who were angels of punishment in human form sent by Allah to try these people and to expose their perversity.

The Qur’an narrates the story: “And when Our messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account and did not know how to protect them. He said, ‘This is a day of distress.’ And his people, who had long since been practicing abominations, came rushing toward him. He said, ‘O my people, here are my daughters. They are purer for you, so fear Allah and do not disgrace me in front of my guests. Is there not a single upright man among you?’ They said, ‘Thou knowest well that we have no right to thy daughters, and certainly thou knowest what we want.’ He said, ‘If only I had strength to resist you or had some powerful support!’ Said (the angels) ‘O Lut, truly, we are messengers of thy Lord; they shall not reach thee….’”(Hud: 77-81)

Muslim jurists hold different opinions concerning the punishment for this abominable practice. Should it be the same as the punishment for fornication, or should both the active and passive participants be put to death? While such punishments may seem cruel, they have been suggested to maintain the purity of the Islamic society and to keep it clean of perverted elements.”

Moreover, Sheikh Muhammad Saleh Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi scholar and lecturer, adds:

“Islam emphatically forbids this deed [homosexual sex] and prescribes a severe punishment for it in this world and the next. How could it be otherwise, when the Prophet of Islam (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Whoever you find committing the sin of the people of Lut, kill them, both the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.’ (At-Tirmidhi: 1376) That is, if it is done with consent.”

The scholars of Islam, such as Malik, Ash-Shafi`i, Ahmad and Ishaaq said that (the person guilty of this crime) should be stoned, whether he is married or unmarried.

There is no doubt that this act, which goes against the pure human nature created by Allah, by making men content with men and women with women, destroying families, adversely affecting the birth rate, causing the spread of killer diseases, harming the innocent when children are raped, and generally spreading corruption on earth, should be uprooted and stamped out.”

Thinking of the wisdom behind prohibiting homosexuality and lesbianism, the following can be said:

First, such acts lead to the spread of passivity among the young generation and destroy their morality, since they cannot practice such perversion except after taking some drugs to create for themselves a virtual atmosphere where they feel fake joy. Sufficient unto any person to feel that his manhood is lost.

Second, it destroys the lives of women whose husbands leave them in pursuit of this perversion and they, in turn, try to find a way to satisfy their sexual needs. In such case, the whole society will be no more than chaos.

Third, it is a fierce attack on progeny and pregnancy, which increases the human race.

Fourth, the dangerous diseases that are caused by it are unavoidable and fatal. Topping these illnesses is HIV/AIDS.

Lesbianism

As for lesbianism, it is also no more than a perversion and an attack against the natural relation between a man and a woman.

There is no certain punishment for lesbianism. Still, disciplinary punishment is there for any perverted person who commits it. The Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Islamic Jurisprudence states:

“Muslim jurists agree that there is no certain hadd (punishment) for lesbianism. However, they agree that disciplinary punishment should be administered since it is a sin.”
Such an act spoils the doer’s character and make her testimony unacceptable, as stated in the above named encyclopedia:

“Muslim Jurists agree that a witness should be morally sound. A pervert cannot be taken as a witness. Since lesbianism is an act of perversion, a lesbian cannot be a witness. Even with the jurists not declaring this openly, it can still be understood from their words and conditions.”

Almighty Allah knows best.

Sam Shamoun and David Wood Caught Using a Forgery

Sam Shamoun and David Wood are desperate to use anything to attack Islam. Even forgeries. Seen as Shamoun has been in the business of attacking Islam longer than David Wood, I'd suspect Shamoun may well have already come across a response telling him that the story of killing the poetess is actually a forgery. As for David Wood, I'm not sure. Either way, they are ignorant at the very least.
