Yasir Qadhi Rebukes Robert Spencer and other Right Wing Bigots Attacking the Minister White-Dr Qadhi Dialogue

Many of you are aware that I had a dialogue with James White, a Reformed Baptist minister who has achieved a solid reputation amongst many conservative Christians. (You can find the videos of the debates in the first comment).

What most of you are probably not aware is the severe online character assassination and smear campaigns that Mr White has had to endure from some of his fellow Christians, albeit of the Far Right sector of this country.

Why would any believing Christian be irritated at Minister White, who was allowed into our mosque, and who was very frank about his beliefs regarding Jesus, the Redemption, the Trinity and even the fact that he believes all of us are going to Hell!? (Listen to the entire two-part lecture to get the whole picture, and my response).

Well, apparently, these Far Right individuals truly believe that Muslims are so dangerous, so evil, so deadly, that the mere fact that Mr. White can sit with us, and essentially humanize us as people who believe in our faith, entails that Mr. White is in fact helping and abetting the Muslim Brotherhood, Salafis, Al-Qaeda and other groups (albeit indirectly - he is, according to the analysis of such discerning self-professed intellectuals as Robert Spencer, a 'useful idiot').

A few points to make:

1 - For the record, I did not personally receive any negative comments from any Muslim for inviting Mr. White into our masjid (although I'm sure some Muslims online and in other parts of the world might object). From our side, we all understood the need to have a frank dialogue, and that I speak at a Church where most people had never met a Muslim, and Mr. White speak at our mosque in return.

2 - I cannot deny that one of the reasons any Muslim would talk about Islam in front of a non-Muslim audience is to demonstrate the beauty of Islam, and hope that some amongst them find in it the true message that Jesus himself preached. And I know full well that Mr. White's intentions, which he has expressed explicitly, was to hope that some Muslims convert as they listen to him explain Christianity.

3- However, one of my overriding reasons to wish to speak at a conservative Church was quite simply to dispel the utterly nonsensical notion that the majority of Muslims somehow wish to overthrow the government and install Sharia law in America. The truly terrifying reality for all of us Muslims is the evil nature of the hatred that people like Spencer and people of his ilk perpetrate. That hatred, compounded with the fear-mongering of politicians and the false patriotism of a disgruntled group, whips up the popular support needed to pass such dastardly measures as the recent ban on Muslim immigrants from seven countries. If things persist and the situation deteriorates, that hatred will eventually be used to inflict violence and persecute our women and children and us, as the Japanese were here in America, and as other races and religions were at times of persecution in other lands.

I would be happy if any Christian who listened to my lecture converted. But if they choose not to convert, that's their business to decide, and Allah's to judge. It is not my duty to do anything more than speak.

Islamophobic bigots like Spencer have fabricated this myth of us Muslims (less than 1 % of this land!) having desires to subjugate the rest of the 99 % to our laws and religion. Sadly, many innocent Christians believe these lies, and Spencer continues to profit from that fear (See: http://www.thedailybeast.com/muslim-bashing-can-be-very-luc…).

4- So, essentially, what terrifies Spencer and the Far Right bigots who falsely invoke the noble Prophet Jesus' name as they spey hatred is to actually see two very committed people, a Baptist Minister and a Shaykh, agree to disagree, even as they harshly dismiss each other's faiths and theologies, and argue exclusive salvation for their own faiths. That simple civility - the act of agreeing to disagree - is something that these individuals, wallowing in hate and lies and wanting the rest of us to do the same, simply cannot tolerate.

Hence, the vicious attack on Mr. White.

James, if you're reading this, know that I strongly disagree with your views on Islam, and that it pains me deeply, because I genuinely care about you and like you, that you have such negative (and in my opinion incorrect) views about the Quran, and about our Prophet. Yet, that disagreement doesn't stop me from having a genuine respect for your commitment and sincerity. And that is why I will defend you against your fellow Christians as they smear your name and accuse you of all types of falsehoods.

The real idiots are those who wish to provoke fear and whip up hatred between the two largest religions of the world. Disagree all you want, but live and let live. And if you claim to be a follower of Jesus, then as a Muslim let me tell you: you might want to start by practicing what he preached.

Hadeeth about the blind man who killed his slave woman for blasphemy explained

This video is also uploaded here

For a Muslim scholar explaining this Hadith, see the following

This story is indicative of the justice with which the Muslims dealt with the people of the Book, which was brought by sharee’ah as a mercy to the worlds. The rights of the Jews who had entered into a treaty with the Muslims were guaranteed and protected, and it was not permissible to transgress against them by annoying them or harming them in any way. Hence when the people found a Jewish woman who had been slain, they were upset and they referred the matter to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), who had given them that covenant and promise of safety, and had not taken the jizyah from them. He got angry and adjured the Muslims by Allaah that the one who had done this deed should show himself, so that he might determine his punishment and issue a ruling concerning him. But when he found out that she had broken the covenant time after time, by insulting the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and reviling him, all her rights were denied, and she deserved the punishment of execution which sharee’ah imposes on everyone who reviles the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), whether he is a Muslim, a dhimmi or a mu’aahid, because transgressing against the status of the Prophets is disbelief in Allaah Almighty, and it invalidates every sanctity, right and covenant; it is a major betrayal which deserves the most severe punishment.

Muslim Scholar Reacts Hijab Ban by European Court of Justice (Dr Yasir Qadhi)

The European Court of Justice, the highest court of the European Union, yesterday declared that it was legal for corporations to enforce a ban on all clothing that was of an overtly religious or political nature. Essentially, the equivalent of the Supreme Court of Europe ruled that it is permissible for any company to ban hijabs.

Where does one begin with the absurdity of such a ruling? How does one explain that the very civilization that prides itself on 'freedom' and 'liberty' gets so worked up about a piece of cloth on a woman's head?

The simple fact of the matter is, despite all of the claims of freedom, there are inherent biases that even European supreme court judges are not immune from. It is not 'religious clothing' that they are opposed to, even though that is the language that is used. It is, specifically, the hijab. Nothing else - all bans are incidental. The ban that will result on Sikh turbans or Jewish yarmulkes are unintended collateral damages, needed only to provide the veneer of legitimacy to claim that this ban wasn't solely meant for Muslim women who choose to cover.

Had the court ruled to to ban immodest clothing (short mini-skirts; cleavage showing; etc.), all of Europe would have been in an uproar. 'How dare you legislate what a woman may or may not wear?!' they would loudly proclaim. Yet, for a woman to wish to appear modestly, and to wish to avert lustful eyes from her persona, is somehow an affront to Western sensibilities. Whatever happened to 'live and let live' here?

It is quite simple, really. That they banned the hijab is actually totally understandable. The hijab really and truly frightens them. It is a slap on their face. Given the 'freedoms' they claim to offer women, that a group of women would then choose to turn away from those 'freedoms' and embrace the ultimate freedom of lowering themselves to the laws of the Creator is a rejection of their ideals and values. By choosing to wear the hijab, these sisters actually threaten the masculinity and superiority that many in the West feel. It is, in religious terms, blasphemy in their eyes - the exact equivalent of zealous fundamentalists not tolerating icons and shrines. Just as shrines seem to contradict perfect monotheism, so too does a woman's modesty apparently contradict the sexual freedom and liberties offered by Western society. So, for champions of such 'freedoms', the hijab is an affront that cannot be tolerated.

Frankly, I personally would have much less of a problem if their hatred were explicit. If they were to say, 'We wish to ban the hijab because we are a bunch of sexist, chauvinist Islamophobes', that would actually be so blunt as to not really elicit much of a response from me. To you be your way, and to me mine, and God will judge between us in the end.

But what irritates me to no end is the hypocritical claim of upholding freedom and liberty - the notion that somehow, ideals of individual choice and personal liberties are sacrosanct and inviolable in this society as long as no one else is harmed.

No, dear Europe, that is not just true. Stop pretending that you are bastions of liberty and freedom. Cases like these, and the utter lack of outcry generated, clearly demonstrate the sheer hypocrisy and falsehood of these claims.

Liberalism, it appears, can only tolerate a spectrum of liberals. Otherwise, liberalism is just as illiberal as religious fundamentalism. But at least the fundamentalists are honest with you about what they allow and don't!

Was there "Taqiyyah" in the Dr Yasir - James White Discussion?

These comments from a young Christian apologist stem from an erroneous idea on Taqiyyah. Luis Dizon thinks Dr Yasir Qadhi may have been practicing "Taqiyyah" in the dialogue with Dr James White at a church.

Come on folks, which other group has to deal with this wild-eyed idea that we (Muslims) go around lying ("practicing Taqiyyah") when we talk about our faith? These misconceptions are the product of anti-Muslim propaganda - clearly it's far-reaching and is affecting young Christians in Canada like Luis Dizon. I know there is a bunch of anti-Islam Christian polemicists who propagate such propaganda about the concept of Taqiyya so, sadly, it's not surprising to come across this misconception amongst young Christians.

Let's have a stab at challenging this to help alleviate this problem. Here are Luis' comments:

Furthermore, there is a concern that Sh. Qadhi may be willfully deceiving the people listening because of the Islamic concept of Taqiyyah (dissimulation)...

...And I would like to bring up the topic of Taqiyyah briefly, because I know that that is always on everyone's minds whenever a Muslim preacher or apologist is speaking. I am not unaware that the doctrine of Taqiyyah exists. Was Sh. Qadhi practicing it, or was he not? I'm not going to rule it out, but at the same time, I'd like to remind everyone that we who believe in the principles of justice and fairness adhere to the idea of the presumption of innocence. In other words, you cannot accuse someone of being a liar or deceiver if you don't have any evidence to prove it. If you think that Sh. Qadhi was deliberately misrepresenting what he really thinks, then present your evidence. Having listened to Sh. Qadhi many times, not just in these dialogues but also in his lectures and khutbahs, I have no reason to believe that he is the kind of person who would go around intentionally deceiving people. Maybe he is, but we cannot prove it.

I'd refer Luis and others who may have come across propaganda material from anti-Muslim sources on the concept of Taqiyya to more scholarly authority. In this snippet of an old blog piece I used R. Strothmann’s relevant section in “Shorter Encyclopaedia of Islam” (by H.A.R. Gibb and J.H. Kramers)  and Cyril Glasse’s Concise Encyclopedia of Islam

What is “Taqiyyah”, “Takiya”, “Taqiyya”?

This term is spelt variously; “taqiyyah”, “takiya” or “taqiyya”.

“Takiya (A.), caution, fear (see glossarium to Tabari S.V. T-K-A) pr kitman, “disguise” is the technical term for dispensation from the requirements of religion under compulsion or threat of injury.” [1]

“Taqiyyah (From the root word waqa “to safeguard”; “self-protection” and hence “dissimulation [in order to protect oneself]”).” [2]

So, taqiyyah (takiya, taqiyya) is concerning dissimulation due to force – i.e. when an individual is forced to conceal.

Sadly, the propagandists – in order to obtain an unchecked platform and/or demonize Muslims – have misapplied this term in their propaganda claims of “Muslims are allowed to lie to the non-Muslisms”.

At what level of force is Takiya (Taqiyyah, Taqiya) justified?

“But an individual is not justified in takiya nor bound to hidjra [emigration] if the compulsion remains within the endurable limits, as in the case of temporary imprisonment or flogging which does not result in death” [1]

So, this makes a mockery of the suggestions of “Muslims are allowed to lie to the unbelievers” as even under threat of imprisonment and flogging Muslims are not justified in takiya. The level of force which justifies oneself in takiya is that of an unbearable level.

Takiya (taqiyya, taqiyyah) and the type of lies…

One may ask, what type of “disguise” is allowed under takiya (taqiyyah, taqiyya)?

Let’s be clear about takiya (taqiyyah, taqiyya); “The principle of dissimulation of one’s religious beliefs in order to avoid persecution or imminent harm, where no useful purpose would be served by publicly affirming them.” [2]

“The ethical question whether such forced lies are nevertheless lies, such a forced denial of the faith nevertheless a denial, is not put at all by one “who conceal himself” as he is not in a state of confidence which would be broken by lies or denial.” [1]

So takiya (taqiyyah, taqiyya) is not used to convert folk to Islam nor is it used in Islamic text books or anything of such a nature. It is simply a form of concealment used to avoid persecution

The Epilepsy Lie

Who first invented this lie about the Prophet?

The claims that the Prophet Muhammad suffered from epilepsy rests on a number of shaky assumptions not supported by medical research. They are based solely on the many different descriptions of his state during his reception of revelation. First, the Prophet first received revelation when he was forty years old. This would mean that the Prophet suddenly developed epilepsy later in life as it has never been reported that he suffered from such experiences before.  This is highly unlikely from a medical perspective.

Moreover, epilepsy is seen as one way of explaining the Prophet’s visions and spiritual experiences. The Prophet was not reported to have suffered from any such physical or mental conditions except during his reception of revelation. This would mean that the Prophet’s epilepsy occurred only when he was inspired by verses from the Qur’an. This would be a medical anomaly as epilepsy is not consistently associated with such experiences.

Untreated epilepsy also leads to mental damage and difficulties. The Prophet Muhammad received revelation for 23 years and it was never reported that his memory or mental faculties suffered in any way.

If we consider the entire life history of the Prophet, one sees very clearly the integrity and consistency of his personality and qualities. He transformed the belief, practice and mindset of a corrupt and backward people to a moral and civilized one. He became the father of a nation in a manner unparalleled in human history.

From his family life to his public persona, the details of his life were transparent. And what emerges from a fair-minded look at his personality is that all his achievements cannot be reduced to some single medical reason. Unlike many of the great figures of history, what the Prophet did, said and sanctioned is recorded authentically and even more so after he received revelation.  Indeed the thousands of pages that have been written on his life reveal not a trace of erratic or irrational behavior.

The idea of the Prophet being an epileptic was first advanced by Orientalists whose arguments both from a scientific and historical view are very flimsy. Since then, the argument has been rehashed by propagandists and critics who care little for the basis of their claims. From the above, it is clear that when one looks fairly at the life of the Prophet, it is hard to take such an argument seriously.

Flat Earth Polemic - Yasir Qadhi

I was in a discussion yesterday with a young Muslim struggling with his faith. He mentioned that he had read from sources critical to Islam that the Quran clearly contradicts known facts and represents the world-view of its time (7th century CE). And of the most blatant examples, according to him, was that the Quran clearly preaches that the world is flat. Now, I have said and firmly believe that the genre of 'scientific miracles in the Quran' that we all grew up reading is in fact a dangerous genre, because it reads in 'facts' where no such facts exist, and because it posits one's faith on a purely scientific basis (so that when 'science', which is ever-evolving, might seem to contradict the Quran, this will lead to a weakness of faith). Nonetheless, to claim that the Quran preaches that the world is flat is an outrageous claim. In fact there is unanimous consensus amongst medieval Muslim scholars to the contrary.

Ibn Hazm (d. 1064 CE), wrote over a thousand years ago in his book al-Fisal, "I do not know of a single scholar worth the title of scholar who claims other than that the earth is round. Indeed the evidences in the Quran and Sunnah are numerous to this effect" [al-Fisal, v. 2 p. 78].

Ibn Taymiyya (d. 1328 CE), someone who is typically accused of literalism, wrote that there is unanimous consensus of all the scholars of Islam that the world is round, and that reality and perception also proves this, for, as he writes, it is well known that the Sun sets on different peoples at different times, and does not set on the whole world at the same time. In fact, writes Ibn Taymiyya, it is truly an ignorant person who claims that the earth is not round. [Majmu al-Fatawa, v. 6, p. 586]. And there are many others scholars, such as al-Razi, who wrote on this subject, and I do not know of any medieval scholar who held another view.

All of this shows the necessity of gaining Islamic knowledge from reputable sources, and from verifying anything you read from the people of knowledge.

Muslim Imam Response to Paris Terrorist Attacks

If the current attack taking place in France is coordinated by Muslims, it is truly sad.

These last few months have shown us horrific images of what our Palestinian and Syrian brothers and sisters are suffering from. We have seen first hand the devastation that the American and British invasions of Iraq have led to. It is as if most of the Muslim world is besieged and under attack, primarily from Western lands. As the situation exacerbates, inevitably the rising anger from such attacks will circle back. Violence only begets violence.

Putting aside the very dubious Shar'i justifications proposed by radical groups to justify the retaliatory killings of civilians (again, this is supposing that the current attack has taken place at the hands of religious radicals), the Sharia ALSO takes into account the tangible harms that will come out of an action. Even if these groups believed such random killings to be justified (a belief that I do not share), they would also have to look at the consequences of their actions and THEN judge permissibility. This principle, known as 'weighing the harm', is why our Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) refused to order the execution of the worst hypocrite in Madinah, Abdullah b. Ubay b. Salul. Not that his life was sacred - far from it! - but rather that our Prophet (SAW) fully understood that the negative repercussions and damage that the Muslims would suffer as a result of his execution far outweighed the good that might possibly come out of it.

So what possible good will come of these senseless attacks? Since when have ANY attacks in Western lands helped our Palestinian brothers against Israelis? Or our Afghan and Iraqi brothers and sisters against Western invasions? Or the Muslim refugees anywhere in the world?

Rather than help, such attacks will:

1) Increase the resolve of these powers to send even more military might and aid against innocent Muslims around the world

2) Bring about an increase in hate crimes against Muslims in Western lands

3) Increase the paranoia of Islamphobia around the globe

4) Ease the introduction of more and more draconian legislation that unfairly targets Muslims, under the guise of 'safety from terrorists'

5) Curb more and more speech and dissent that is technically legal

6) Turn the tide against accepting Muslim refugees from Syria and other war-torn zones
...and many, many, many more harms.

The fact of that matter is that I cannot see a single tangible positive that the tactics of such groups bring (again, with the caveat that this attack in France is coming from such groups). Yet, the harms from such attacks only increases as a result, and the consequences are that the 'War Against Terror' is bolstered, leading to a war of terror.

And the saddest fact of all? That neither side seems to understand what they are doing will only increase the desperation and violence of the other side. No one learns from history. We are locked in a vicious cycle, from which unfortunately no easy way out is evident

Similarities Between Catholic Terrorist Group IRA and Muslim Terrorist Group ISIS

From 1969 to 1997, certain Irish-Catholic groups, under the banner of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), began targeting British military, royalty, and eventually, even the broader public. Throughout the 70s, 80s and early 90s, many dozens of bombs were detonated by the IRA, typically in public places, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians (at times even Royalty: a grandson of Queen Victoria, Lord Mountbatten of Indian fame, was also assassinated by the IRA).

The goal of the IRA was clear. They wanted political freedom from the United Kingdom, and viewed their land, Ireland, as having been illegally invaded, occupied, and illegitimately ruled by the British. They had a long list of grievances regarding how the British routinely mistreated the Irish (dating back to the 17th century!!). The British paid no head to their complaints, until finally the IRA felt that they had no option but to fight back, hence they launched these paramilitary campaigns.

During this period of violence, the IRA was labelled as a 'terrorist organization' (which it clearly was). And their Catholic heritage as well played a role in their anti-British sentiment, since the British were Anglicans. Nonetheless, no one of intelligence viewed ALL Catholics as somehow being a part of the IRA. Even being 'Irish' was not considered guilt by association (except of course by a handful of bigoted racists).

What is truly bizarre is that everyone knew that large segments of the Irish-Catholic population sympathized with the goals of the IRA, and shared the same grievances even while they disagreed with their tactics. In other words, the average person clearly understood that sympathizing with the grievances did not mean sympathizing with the terrorists' tactics. Eventually, political leaders realized that no matter how repugnant the tactics of the IRA, the grievances that they had were legitimate and would have to be dealt with if peace was desired. And that is exactly when the ruling party in 1997 managed to bring an end to the Irish conflict: by acknowledging that there was legitimate anger, and that a solution would have to be proposed that dealt with those political problems.

Sadly, when it comes to brown skin colors, and the very different religion of Islam, all of that sensibility seams to be lost.

Being 'Muslim' doesn't translate into support for ISIS. Having political grievances (e.g,. false invasions; legalizing Islamophobia, etc.) and sympathizing with oppressed people (e.g., the Palestinians, Iraqis, Afghans, etc.) doesn't translate into wanting to kill everyone else. Terrorism almost ALWAYS stems from political grievances, even if those who perpetrate them happen to follow another religion. And a genuine solution must take into account the causes for terrorism and then deal with those causes, even if all rational people oppose the irrational and inhumane tactics of the terrorists.

There are two segments of mankind who believe that 'the West' is at war with 'Islam': the Far Right, and ISIS. Each side wants to convince more and more people that that is the case. If we in the middle fall for that narrative instead of fighting the radicals on both sides, more and more violence will continue, and there will be no solution in sight.

Specialities of Prophet Muhammad Seerah 1 - Yasir Qadhi

If this video does not play please see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA3uC7FuojQ

My notes from this class

Some of the broad characteristics of Prophet Muhammad p are discussed in this video by Dr Yasir Qadhi.

And raised high for you your repute. See Quran 94:4

In Quran 21:107 we learn Prophet Muhammad was a sent as a mercy to the entire world.

Allah has raised up the mentioning and remembrance of Prophet Muhammad. Muslims ask Allah to send peace and blessings on Prophet Muhammad on a daily basis.

Names of Prophet Muhammad

Prophet Muhammad had many names. Many of which were given to him after he left this world. The  Prophet Muhammad confirmed some of his names:

Muhammad - this name was mentioned 4 times in the Quran. This name means he is given continuous praise (it refers to the quantity of praise)
Ahmad - this name was mentioned in the Quran from the tongue of Jesus p. This name is a reference to the quality of praise Prophet Muhammad receives.

Both Muhammad and Ahmad come from the word Hamida (to praise, yaHmadu). Praise is different to gratitude (shukr). Hamd is higher than shukr, it's the highest form of praise. It's something that's given due to the inherent characteristics of the object being praised.

Muslims obviously praise Prophet Muhammad but even those who reject Prophet Muhammad also praise his qualities such as his leadership abilities, mercy, character, nobility, manners etc.

Prophet Muhammad is the most praised man in history. There's no minute on earth that goes by that somebody around the world is not asking God to send more blessings on him.

Prophet Muhammad is given the Maqam al Mahmoud - the praise-worthy station/rank . On the Day of Judgement all of mankind will go to Prophet Muhammad p and ask him to be a representative to plead to Allah and ask Allah to begin the Judgement.

Mahi - the one used to erase disbelief. Maha means to efface/wipe out. Allah wiped out disbelief through Prophet Muhammad. This can be seen geographically following the expansion of Islam.

Hashir - people will be resurrected after him (he will be the first person to be resurrected). Ala qadami means at my feet, as a reference to right after me.

Aqib - there's no prophet after him. It means the one who comes at the end (of the chain of the Prophets)

Nabi of Rahma - Prophet of mercy

Nabi of Tawba - Prophet of repentance

Mukafa - the one who comes at the end and makes the message of the previous Prophets complete.

Nabi of Mulahim - the Prophet who signals lots of trials.

Prophet Muhammad's specialities

Some scholars have listed up to 50 unique characteristics and blessings that only he was given. Some of these:

He is the last of the Prophets of Allah. (see Quran 33:40)

The Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad was decreed before the existence of Adam. (See 26 min mark of the video)

He was the only Prophet Muhammad who was specifically sent to all of humanity unlike Adam and Noah (pbut) whose situations led to this.

He has been given the largest Ummah out of all the Prophets. It is hoped that his Ummah will be two-thirds of Jannah. There's a prophecy discussed  around the 33-34 time frame. Prophet Muhammad was speaking at a time where there was only perhaps 1500 Muslims on earth and 2-3million Christians.

He has been given the most powerful miracle - the Quran. We do not have access to all the other miracles that Prophet Muhammad and other Prophets were given. The Quran is a living miracle.

He was given the night journey of Isra and Miraj.

He is the leader of the whole of humanity.

He will be given the main river of Jannah.

He will be the first to enter Jannah.

He will have the highest level in Jannah.

Muslims give the most charity and have least sex outside of marriage!

Muslim Attack on France Was NOT a Terrorist Attack!!

The Islamophobes have been caught spreading lies on this one AGAIN. It turns out the criminal who attacked passengers on the train in France was not a radical extremist Muslim linked to ISIS, Al Qaeda etc. he was simply a thief in dire need of money.

BTW Well done to the Americans who stopped the criminal. But let's be clear here, the Islamophobes who spread their hateful and deceitful spin on this were misleading people.

So a few days ago, a Muslim attacked passengers on a train in France, and was tackled and held down by some Americans who happened to be on the train.

Obviously, none of us has any sympathy for a man who's carrying a gun and attacking innocents. What's sad was that immediately it was announced that the person, so it was claimed, had ties to 'Islamist jihadist' groups, and instantaneously this became yet another 'radical Muslim extremist' attack. In fact, we are all so immune to this association of Islam with terrorism that most of us Muslims also assumed that this guy was another crazy ISIS supporter type.

Yet, it turns out that he was just a 'regular' thief who, desperate for food, decided to rob a train for money. In fact, the robber is 'dumbfounded' by the accusations that he is a radical jihadist. Turns out, at one point in his life, he was a drug dealer!

Of course this doesn't justify or mitigate his crime, but the point here is that (surprise surprise) Muslims also commit regular crimes not linked to terrorism!!

"Of the perfection of one's faith is that he leaves that which does not concern him"

The famous hadith master Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (d. 275 AH) once remarked that the entire religion of Islam revolves around four traditions of the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam). One of those that he considered to be so fundamental is the hadith: "Of the perfection of one's faith is that he leaves that which does not concern him" [Reported by al-Tirmidhi].

Ponder over the manners that this hadith strives to inculcate in all of us, and then let each one of us examine his or her own life, statements and actions to see the extent that we have implemented this profound saying of our Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam).

There is no Islamic evidence which links Dhul Qarnayn with Alexander the Great. In fact, as Dr Yasir Qadhi points out, there's evidence to the contrary.

I'd ask Muslims to be mindful of this and Christian missionaries such as the one featured in this video to desist from propagating this erroneous speculation.

Muslim Scholar Responds to Pakistani Child Sex Abuse Scandal

The recent child abuse scandal in Pakistan highlights a problem that has become taboo in our community yet is endemic: sexual molestation of children.

The sad truth is that on average, 1 in 5 girls worldwide are molested (and these are what have been reported; I would venture that the fraction is even higher than that). And of course boys are molested as well. What is truly terrifying is that most molestors are not strangers, but rather family and friends.

In my own interactions with the Muslim community, I have had way too many cases of this nature brought to my attention, typically by the victims once they have grown older and want to do something about it. But the community does not want to hear about the reality of this problem, and would rather avoid even mentioning it.

Parents: PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELVES ON THE REALITY OF SEXUAL ABUSE, ITS SYMPTOMS, AND ITS PREVENTION. Teach your children, even as young as four or five, that some areas of their body are off limits to ANYONE unless its a doctor in your presence.

Be on the look out for signs of sexual abuse (physical and mental). And be more believing of young children if they raise concerns, for typically a child cannot make up such a story of molestation and lie about it. Establish extremely strict rules about when and where they can spend the night away from home (or better yet: put a blanket ban on spending the night in anyone else's house). And never, ever let a false sense of 'protecting the honor of someone' prevent you from exposing or prosecuting a legitimate case of child abuse. Anyone who would dare sexually exploit a child deserves ZERO sympathy, and in my opinion if you help cover up such a crime, you are a criminal as well.

May Allah bring the people who did this heinous deed in Pakistan to justice, and may He bring peace and heal the wounds of those innocent children.

Muslim Scholar on Recent Quranic Manuscript Carbon 14 Dating

The recent carbon dating of an ancient Quranic manuscript at the University of Birmingham has now added even more proof regarding the unparalleled degree of certainty with which the Quran has been preserved. These folios have been Carbon 14 dated to within the same time frame, or perhaps shortly after, our Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam). In other words, if this parchment wasn't written for/by a Companion, then it was written by/for a student of one of the Companions.

In this image, prepared by Prof Godlas, you can see the original manuscript, written in the ancient Hijazi manuscript, and compare it with its modern, typed equivalent.

This collection, called the 'Mingana collection' (after the researcher Alphonse Mingana, d. 1937) was purchased by Mingana in either Iraq or Syria, almost a hundred years ago. Edward Cadbury, the founder of the famous chocolate company, sponsored Mingana's trips to the Middle East. His collection, which includes hundreds of manuscripts, is primarily housed at the University of Birmingham, in the UK.

Many Muslims ask me, 'How come so many Islamic documents and manuscripts ended up in non-Muslim lands and libraries?' The response, in a nutshell is: colonialism, and the power of money. Some manuscripts were simply 'acquired'; but most were sold by private owners, or on the black market, to travelers from Europe who could pay what would have been considered astronomical prices for the time.

And frankly, that is a good thing. The Muslim world simply did not have (nor does it have!) the latest technology or the scientific means to take care of these manuscripts the way that the Western world is now doing. It is my belief that Divine Will is allowing these manuscripts to be preserved in the best manner possible, even if that is occurring at the hands of those who do not believe in them in the first place.

"Truly, we have sent down this Remembrance, and We shall, for sure, preserve it" [Quran]

Is Salafism Behind ISIS Terrorism - DR YASIR QADHI

I've clipped this short clip of Dr Yasir Qadhi, a trained Islamic theologian, answering the question on whether Wahhabism is responsible for terrorism. Previously I showcased a clip of Chris Hedges answering this question to a similar tune but seen as Dr Yasir Qadhi specialises in theology it should be more than sufficient to make those motivated by sectarian reasons amongst us Muslims to be more balanced and academic...rather than ignorantly blaming Wahhabis for terrorism. Think deeper.

Dr Yasir Qadhi does not think ISIS is directly caused by Wahhabism.

Here are some take home points from Dr Yasir Qadhi on this:

Wahhabism is a strand of Sunni Islam. Wahhabism/Salafism is predominant in Saudi Arabia and Qatar - it's becoming more and more popular in Egypt too.

Groups such as Al Qaeda mainly owe their genesis to radical breakaway movements of the Muslim Brotherhood. The militantism and terrorism of ISIS does not come from Salafism/Wahhabism. Most Salafis are aplolitcal. As a comparison, Dr Yasir Qadhi tries to make easier for the Western audience to understand by saying they are somewhat similar to the Amish and the Orthodox Jews in their desire to live pure lives. They are an innocent and innocuous group within broader society - they just want to live their own lives.

Did Prophet Muhammad (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) know how to read and write?

In the fourth century of Islam in the land of Andalusia Muslim Spain a huge controversy arose. A number of reputable Muslim Scholars began to claim that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) who is referred to in the Qur'an and the previous scriptures as the 'unlettered' Prophet, actually knew how to read and write!

A court case was filed in Andalusia against such a "blasphemous" claim that went against the very text of the Qur'an, and so a theological and textual debate took place among some of the most well known Muslim Scholars of that era disputing the validity of this controversial claim.

Did Prophet Muhammad (salla Allah alayhi wa sallam) really know how to read and write?

In this video clip Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi shares his reflections on this controversial issue and the evidences surrounding it from both camps. ~ [YQ Admin]

Were the Tennessee Shootings Domestic Terrorism?

It's reported the suspect was an American citizen. We don't know if this man was suffering from psychological problems, attempting reprisal attacks on behalf of disgruntled groups in the Middle East who may have been subjected to American attacks or whether there were other motives.

Four U.S. Marines were killed on Thursday by a gunman who opened fire at two military offices in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before being fatally shot in an attack officials called a brazen, brutal act of domestic terrorism.

The FBI named the suspect as Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, 24, but said it was too early to speculate on a motive for the rampage, which comes at a time when U.S. military and law enforcement authorities are increasingly concerned about the threat posed by 'lone wolves' to domestic targets. [Reuters]

IF a serious and intellectual discussion does develop from this the media need to begin getting intellectuals such as Yasir Qadhi and Noam Chomsky in their studios to offer insight which is much more convincing than the right wing Islamophobic narrative out there.

Perhaps now we can actually move away from the narrative of 'theologically driven' terrorists and start to look at how Western foreign policy has led to home-grown terrorism.
