Here we see there has been a consensus for centuries amongst Muslim scholar on the prohibition of honor killing. Not only this, we also see honor killings are not specific to Arabia and Muslims.

Along with quips about camels and hummus, 'honor killing' is among the first phrases that average folk in the West associate with Islam. ...Violence committed against women for perceived compromises of family honor is a product of patriarchal societies suffering from economic underdevelopment. The phenomenon is found across religions and from Brazil to India. Ironically, those Arab countries with legal provisions that treat honor crimes more lightly than comparable offenses all draw these laws from the Ottoman Criminal Code of 1858. It, in turn, translated this provision directly from the French Legal Code of 1810.

Questions about honor killings have regularly found their way into the inboxes of leading muftis like Yusuf Qaradawi or the late Lebanese Shiite scholar Muhammad Husayn Fadlallah. The right wing are using the story of a teenage girl in Italy who was beaten up by her family for being 'too Western' as a stick to attack Muslims on a whole.

Firstly, they say the teenager was a 'Muslima' (female Muslim) despite the article not mentioning her religion. The right wing simply presume the family are Muslims as it mentions her Moroccan father. Would the right wing like it if American teens who crazily shoot up their classmates were reported as 'Christian' around the world simply assumed fromtheir American nationality? Of course not, so why do it to Moroccans or folk from other Muslim countries?

Secondly, the right wing juxtapose this news story with honor killings. We have already seen honor killings are not part of Islam (see below)

Thirdly, I can see that generally actions of violence seem to be a substitute for lazy parenting. Surely, if you want your child to grow up with the values of Islam then it's better to invest time, money and energy into seeing your child has an Islamic upbringing where he/she is nurtured and educated rather than being lazy and just threatening or using violence whilst the child has never received that nurturing. Mosques around /Europe really need to employ imams who can advise Muslim parents on raising children with Islamic values as well as connecting Muslim males and females to the mosque from an early age.

Pamela Geller wrongly claims that honor killings is a practice under Islamic Law (Sharia). This is a blatant falsehood. In the video we see Dr Bilal Phillips teach that Honor Killings is not allowed according to Islamic Law - in fact he teaches that the Sharia (Islamic Law) sees honor killing as MURDER which is punishable by execution.

It's interesting to notice how Muslim scholars such as Dr Shabir Ally, Hamza Yusuf and Dr Bilal Phillips all disagree with the wild assertions of Pamela Geller concerning the Islamic view on honor killings. Sadly, people like Pamela Geller continue to spread their ignorance and prejudice and the scholarly voices are being drowned out.

Aside from the misinformation Pam Geller presents about Islam's view on honor killings the other worrying aspect of her work is her misappropriating of pictures of the victims of honor killings. Islamophobes such as Geller will trample on the misery and the hurt of others just to pursue their agenda of attacking Islam and demonizing Muslims. Truthful and sincere people don't do this.

Another point that came out of the video is that honour killings, as mentioned by Hamza Yusuf, have a long history and indeed are not simply peculiar to Muslims. Hamza Yusuf menions that it has taken place in Arab Christian communities as well as Mexico. Of course, honor killings are not limited to these communities - all communities have experienced honor killings be they Sikh, Hindu, Jewish, Atheist, Buddhist etc.. Hamza Yusuf mentioned the figure of 20 million abortions having been conducted in America, isn't this at least in some instances a form of honor killing?

And finally, Dr Shabir Ally mentions those who perpetrate honor killings are not following the Quran, he then mentions that he can find something that can be described as honor killing in the Bible. I Wonder if Pamela Geller would call Dr Shabir Ally and ask him for the Bible references and then make a video about Christianity and Honor killing entitled 'Christian Biblical Honor Killngs'? Guess she won't. Guess the donations and other support she receives would diminish quite considerably if she did. That's the nature of the business of ISLAMOPHOBIA!

Muslim Condemns Sick Imam Who Raped a Girl in Mosque

Muslim condemns sex crime and hate


Sexually perverted people belong to all religions. Islam is no different. Sadly for Muslims, when a sick Muslim commits a sexual crime it's used as a propaganda tool to attack all Muslims and even Islam by right-wing Islamophobes.


That's exactly what's happening with the story of a sick imam in Afghanistan who brutally raped a 10 year old girl in a mosque. Notice the parallels between this account and the accounts of Christian priests and pastors who commit similar sexual crimes on young girls and boys. The difference is, the sick sexual crimes by the Christian leaders are, on the whole, not used as propaganda pieces to attack all Christians and Christianity. This is not the case when a Muslim commits similar sick acts:
Kunduz, Afghanistan:  It was bad enough that the alleged rape took place in the sanctity of a mosque and that the accused man was a mullah who invoked the familiar defense that it had been consensual sex.

But the victim was only 10 years old. And there was more: The authorities said her family members openly planned to carry out an honor killing in the case - against the young girl. The mullah offered to marry his victim instead.

As a Muslim I condemn the sick sexual crime committed by this imam regardless of where it took place. However the corruption is even more apparent as he committed his crime in a mosque according to the report.

As a Muslim I pray that this girl makes a full recovery and is protected from further harm. Ameen.

We have already seen Islam does not allow rape as per the comments of famous Muslim scholars.

The worry for this Afghan rape victim is that of honor killing now:

Honor killings in rape cases are common in Afghanistan, and are often more important to the victim's family than vengeance against the attacker. Human rights groups say about 150 honor killings a year come to light, and many more probably go unreported.

Honor killing is another backward practice which learned Muslims have condemned. It's something that is not allowed in Islam as seen in this video featuring Sheikh Hamza Yusuf and Dr Bilal Philips.

All in all, reports of crimes such as these should never be misused for purposes of an anti-Muslim campaign. The ignorant crimes of a Muslim in Afghanistan or wherever is not synonymous with Islam and is not representative of the Muslim global community. Just like the sexual crimes of Christian priests and pastors are not reflective of Christianity and/or other Christians.

Imam Zaid Shakir on Honor Killings

Islamophobic bigots always highlight honor killings when a Muslim is involved yet seem to be pretty silent when a non-Muslim is involved. They do the same for rape, when a Pakistani rapes, the Islamophobes are shouting from the roof tops. How many Islamophobes have been discussing the problem of rape in India or the US army? Not many - if any!

All this disparity in reporting is designed to single out the Muslim and unfairly paint the Muslim in a poor light. It's all hatred. The meat and drink of the Islamophobe is to portray Islam as allowing honor killings - the thing is it does NOT allow honor killings!

We've already seen Sheikh Hamza Yusuf and Dr Bilal Philips condemn honor killings, now we have Imam Zaid Shakir denouncing honor killings as un-Islamic:

The following is a response, based on an earlier article, to the murder of Farzana Parveen on the steps of a courthouse in Lahore Pakistan, allegedly by members of her family. 

"For that reason, we ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul for other than murder or spreading corruption in the land, it is as if he has killed the whole of humanity…" Qur’an 5:32

One of the gravest charges levied against Islam, in terms of its supposed misogyny, is the claim that it encourages a phenomenon known as honor killings. This un-Islamic practice consists of the murder of female family members who are seen as dishonoring their families through real or perceived acts of indiscretion, such as premarital sexual relations or unapproved dating. This charge has been intensified recently due to the tragic murder of a twenty-five year old woman on the steps of a courthouse in Lahore. What had she done to dishonor her family? She had married a man other than the cousin chosen for her by her family. Her marriage was legal under Pakistani law.

The practice of honor killings has absolutely no sanction in the Qur’an, the Prophetic practice, or in the evolved systems of Islamic law. In the case of fornication or adultery, the only way a charge can be levied against an individual, male or female, is through confession, which is discouraged, or by four people actually witnessing the male organ penetrating the female. Even if four people witnessed a naked man engaged with a naked woman, but could not actually testify that they witnessed penetration, their testimony would be rejected and there would be no punishment of either of the suspicious parties.

In a somewhat related issue, it should be noted that in three of the four Sunni schools of law, and all of the major Shiite schools, pregnancy is not a proof of fornication, as the possibility of rape exists in such a case. Therefore, if a single woman were to become pregnant, according to the overwhelming majority of Islamic jurists, there is no basis for punishing her. 

In the case of dating, there is no Islamically-mandated punishment for a male or a female seeing a member of the opposite sex against the wishes of their families. Such situations should be handled with counseling, compassion and a healthy dose of common sense. 

In a someone related issue, Muslim immigrants who have come to the West should realize that they have placed their children in an environment where there is a tremendous amount of un-Islamic peer pressure. This is especially true if they have placed their children in public schools, as was the case of the young lady who was murdered by members of her family several years ago in a well-publicized case in Canada. Children who succumb to that pressure should not be seen as “bad” kids, for by the standards of the society that has shaped them, no matter how strong their home environment is, they are normal. To kill a female guilty of an offense such as dating or dressing like her peers under such circumstances is nothing short of cold-blooded murder, and no Islamic authority can argue otherwise.

The overwhelming majority of Muslim societies are free from the practice of honor killing, although it does endure in some parts of the Middle East and South Asia. According to statistics released by the United Nations in 2000 there are approximately 5,000 deaths annually from “honor” killings. Even if one killing occurred due to such barbarity, it would be one too many, as the above-mentioned Qur’anic verse emphasizes.

To use the existence of such killings to smear Islam shows the desperation and misplaced priorities of many of those levying such attacks. Most of those deaths are the pathetic acts of sick individuals, who are far removed from the letter, as we have shown above, as well as the spirit of Islam. An example of such an individual is Muhammad Riaz, a British Muslim of South Asian descent who died in 2007 as a result of a fire he set to burn to death his wife and four daughters, allegedly because his wife resisted his attempt to arrange marriages for their daughters. His wife and daughters also perished in that fire. To present Riaz, whose daughters had neither fornicated nor dated, as anything other than a sick individual is truly sad.

Attacking Islam from this angle is a case of misplaced priorities because it can distract attention from far more widespread abuses of women, which like honor killings, demand immediate redress. For example, the State Department estimates that approximately 800,000 women and girls are trafficked as sexual slaves annually. The overwhelming majority of these females are taken from and sent to nominally Christian countries. It would be totally disingenuous to present this sordid practice as an indictment of Christianity. 

Over the last decade, well over five thousand women have been kidnapped and then gruesomely murdered in Guatemala. Their bodies usually turn up after a few days, mutilated and in some instances with messages such as “death to bitches” written on them. To date, only a handful of men have been incarcerated in connection with those attacks. In fact, Central America, topped by El Salvador, has the highest rates of female murders in the world. This region is exclusively Christian. It would be easy and simplistic to attribute such femicide to Christianity while ignoring the complicated plethora of social, cultural and economic factors behind it. The same is true in the case of Islam and honor killings.

Another situation demanding immediate redress is the plight of women in many areas witnessing armed conflict. In many of these areas, where all semblance of governmental authority has broken down, rape is endemic. One such area is the eastern Congo. Tens of thousands of women have been raped, many in the most brutal fashion. Visitors to the area state that no female, regardless of age, is safe. There are reports of women being strung up on poles for days on end and then repeated raped by any soldier passing by. Again, the Congo, and Rwanda, where many of the transgressing soldiers come from, are predominately Christian countries. Should this violence be seen as a Christian or as a human problem? The answer is quite clear. It is a human problem. So too honor killings.

In this context, we can point out the massive problem of rape in non-Muslim countries such as India, currently reeling from the scandalous rape and murder of two teenage girls. In fact, a woman or girl is raped every 22 minutes somewhere in India. We can also mention the systemic rape and other forms of misogyny plaguing institutions such as the US military. In trying to address these problems, wider socio-cultural issues are the first consideration, not religion.

Honor killings are an extreme form of domestic violence and should be seen as such. Here in the United States, such killings in the Muslim community are extremely rare –if widely publicized when they do occur. On the other hand, in the wider community, there are approximately 1,200 women killed every year by their husbands or intimate partners. There are other non-Muslim nations where the number of murders of this type is even higher. When we point to manifestations of such violence in Muslim communities as being an exclusively "Muslim" issues, we miss the opportunity to discover the real roots of the problem, leaving it largely unaddressed -both in Muslim and other contexts.

Femicide is murder regardless of the cultural context it occurs in. It is an issue that is an affront to human dignity and requires our collective attention. We must move beyond ideologically-driven efforts to attribute any barbaric practice undertaken by a misguided Muslim as informed by “Shariah” and somehow unassociated with similar or more egregious actions undertaken by member of other communities. Until we view such problems in this comparative manner, we are in jeopardizing the health and integrity of our society.

Saying this is not to minimize the gravity of so-called honor killings to the extent that they do occur in Muslim societies. As Muslims, we are commanded to be committed to justice. That commitment entails that as a community we oppose in the strongest terms “honor” killings and take immediate action to end such a practice in our communities. 

Practical steps include the following:

1. Emphasize that such killings have no sanction in the Qur’an, the Prophetic practice, or in Islamic law.
2. Declare anyone guilty of involvement in honor killings to be a cold-blooded murderer.
3. Encourage judicial authorities to enact the harshest penalties possible for anyone accused of involvement in such killings.
4. Educate our Muslim communities about the un-Islamic nature of honor killings, and the pressures, nuances, challenges and complications facing young Muslims, male and female, wherever they may be.
5. Work to eliminate the double standards, and to expose the hypocrisy that exist in our communities, generally, concerning attitudes and standards relating to the indiscretions of males as opposed to females.

In conclusion, Islam honors the female, and values femininity. It is up to every Muslim to translate teachings in that regard into a beautiful reality that helps to elevate the status of women in all societies. Honor killings, domestic violence in general, murders of the type terrorizing women in Central America, rape, female sexual slavery and trafficking, as well as pornography, are all crimes against humanity that we should oppose in the strongest terms and work strenuously to eliminate. If our women are not safe, psychically, emotionally, spiritually, or psychologically we are all at risk, for without women men are incomplete, and without men women are incomplete. Our Prophet, peace and blessings of God upon him alluded to this when he said, peace upon him, “Women are the complimenting halves of men.” We must all work much harder to make our community whole.

It's really disappointing to see the huge number of Christian missionaries that are utterly dishonest when speaking about Islam. I recently pointed out James White's refutation of two Christian hate preachers who were disregarding truth in their efforts to bash Muslims and attack Islam.

Pakistan and Honor Killings

Pakistanis need to get the message over to their fellow country men and women that Islam does not allow honor killings.

ISLAMABAD: In 2013, as many as 202 women were murdered in the name of Karo-kari (honour killing) in Sindh, Special Home Secretary Sindh informed the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights on Monday.

The secretary also stated that at least 28 honour killing cases have been reported in 2014 thus far.
He added that the incidence of honour killing in interior Sindh is continuously rising because of the jirga system that exists in all districts of the rural parts of the province.

Aside from the misinformation Pam Geller presents about Islam's view on honor killings the other worrying aspect of her work is her misappropriating of pictures of the victims of honor killings. Islamophobes such as Geller will trample on the misery and the hurt of others just to pursue their agenda of attacking Islam and demonizing Muslims. Truthful and sincere people don't do this.

Another point that came out of the video is that honour killings, as mentioned by Hamza Yusuf, have a long history and indeed are not simply peculiar to Muslims. Hamza Yusuf menions that it has taken place in Arab Christian communities as well as Mexico. Of course, honor killings are not limited to these communities - all communities have experienced honor killings be they Sikh, Hindu, Jewish, Atheist, Buddhist etc.. Hamza Yusuf mentioned the figure of 20 million abortions having been conducted in America, isn't this at least in some instances a form of honor killing?

And finally, Dr Shabir Ally mentions those who perpetrate honor killings are not following the Quran, he then mentions that he can find something that can be described as honor killing in the Bible. I Wonder if Pamela Geller would call Dr Shabir Ally and ask him for the Bible references and then make a video about Christianity and Honor killing entitled 'Christian Biblical Honor Killngs'? Guess she won't. Guess the donations and other support she receives would diminish quite considerably if she did. That's the nature of the business of ISLAMOPHOBIA!

Islam-Watch Refuted on Honor Killings

Refutation of Syed Kamran Mirza’s Article entitled: “Honor Killing” is Absolutely Islamic!

Having already corrected other misleading work from Syed Kamran Mirza concerning Islam I have come across further work of his which requires correction. I do understand he presented much of his work about 10-15 years ago and a lot of it is still in circulation on the internet and it will be physically difficult for him to correct and retract his shoddy and misleading scholarship on Islam, nevertheless; I urge him to correct his work as it error-laden.

This particular piece of Mirza’s work (“Honor Killing” is Absolutely Islamic!), which is to be discussed, is equally shoddy and misleading.

Prior to coming across Mirza’s claims on honor killings I had already produced a small piece of writing which illustrated the fact that honor killings are not allowed in Islam. This work, God-Willing, will be appended into appendix 1 at the end of the article.

Despite the false accusation of honor killings being allowed in Islam is not as widespread amongst critics of Islam it is still a dangerous misconception which is becoming more common due to the desperation of certain critics. It does not surprise me that Mirza made this claim as he has a history of unorthodox and bizarre claims against Islam.

Before beginning, it is important to illustrate to the reader that honor killings are not allowed in Islam. The best way to highlight this is by searching Islamic Law to find any requirement for honor killings. This search clearly indicates that there is nothing in Islamic Law which allows honor killings. Therefore honor killing is not sanctioned by Islam thus highlighting the falsehood in Mirza’s claims. To be more thorough I will offer the opinion of the Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, on this issue:

“There is no such concept in Islam that is called “honor killing”. Islam holds every soul in high esteem and does not allow any transgression upon it. It does not allow people to take the law in their own hands and administer justice, because doing so will be leading to chaos and lawlessness. Therefore, based on this, Islam does not permit such killings.” [1]

So Mirza is in a pickle here and is clearly incorrect with his bold assertion; “Honor Killing is Absolutely Islamic”. OK, having established Mirza has no authority and is clearly wrong let us look at some other aspects of his article.

Mirza arrogantly claims “very often civilized people do blame Islam as the precursor of this dreadful act. Most others do not agree with this notion at all; and they try to put the blame on the tribal/cultural practice, and do not consider Islam is anyway responsible for it” [2]

Mirza suggests it is the civilised people who blame Islam for this practice; thus inferring the uncivilised do not blame Islam for the practice of honor-killings. Well Mirza ends up with egg on his face as I have clearly demonstrated (with Islamic authority) that honor killings are not Islamic therefore Mirza should correct himself by claiming it is the ignorant who blame Islam for honor killings and not the civilised whilst it is the educated ones who do not blame Islam for honor killings.

Staying on the same subject Mirza begins to attack non-Muslims who are unwilling to be as unscholarly as he is; “Most Muslim apologists and also some gullible westerners want to argue that the ‘so called “honor killing” is not Islamic and it’s a tribal/cultural vice.’ This statement is utterly untrue and only a wish full covers up”. [2]

Well, I suggest Mirza puts his campaign of propaganda aside and re-research Islam rather than attacking Islam with preconceived ideas. This way he will not look quite so biased against Islam, unscholarly and arrogant.

If Mirza’s arrogance has not shocked you, his ignorance will certainly shock you; Mirza goes on to claim “And this kind of cruel killings to save family honor had happened, still happening, and will remain to happen—only to a Muslim family. Honor killings happen only to some designated Muslim nations” [2]

Absolutely amazing! After this comment I am certain, even the most ardent supporter of Mirza (critic of Islam) will begin to doubt Mirza’s claims and reliability. Mirza only needs to read a few news articles to realise honor killings occur in Sikh, Hindu and Christian communities too. In fact it is a big issue amongst the Hindu and Sikh communities and occurs all over the planet.

However prior to Mirza’s shocking attempt to convince us that honor killings are an exclusive activity of Muslims Mirza contradicts himself by writing “Honor killing is a manifestation of global phenomenon in general and Muslim nations in particular.” [2]

Mirza further contradicts himself by claiming “However, some very rare, sporadic case of such killing might have happened in other society or people of other religion” [2]. Thus it appears Mirza was either undecided or was shoddy in editing.

Mirza proceeds to give nine distinct stories of honor killings within the Muslim community, as Mirza has a habit of being unreliable and not having enough time to painstakingly check Mirza’s information I will not comment. However, it should not be taken as a denial that honor killings occur in the Muslim community; they do occur but they are un-Islamic, i.e. not allowed in Islam therefore the Muslim committing the crime of honor killing is contravening (going against) Islamic teachings.

Mirza tries to present a further case against Islam by stating “Had it been the tribal/cultural practice, ‘honor killing’ would exist amongst the Arabs only. But honor killing does happen amongst the non-Arab Muslims also. Also Arabs belonged to all religions (Muslims, Christians, Jews, Bhai etc.) would practice honor killing with equal prevalence. Fact of the matter is—no Arab Christians, Jews or Bahai etc do practice this uncivilized act at all.” [2]

In fact Claire Murphy’s (BBC News) statement corrects and educates Mirza and shows Mirza that other cultures and religious communities have the same problem of honor killings; “It is widely agreed that the root and cause of honour killing is a complex, historical phenomenon which has no justification in Islam's holy book, the Koran, and which has also been known to occur elsewhere in the world and among other religions.” [3]

So Mirza fails with this attempt to convince the reader. Mirza finally, somewhat half-heartedly, quotes irrelevant English translations from Muslim sources (the Quran and aHadith). Mirza presents these quotes and he too seems to realise that even these quotes do not prove his ideas and in order to save face and retain a little credibility he entitles his list of quotes with; “Dictums of Quran and Hadiths which may dictate/incite honor killing”

Note the word “may”; this seems very incompatible with Mirza’s bold assertion in the title of his work, “Honor Killing is Absolutely Islamic!”

It appears as though, even Mirza’s fertile imagination could not even attempt to manipulate the quotes he presented to try and back up his assertion which wrongly claims honor killings are Islamic. The fact still remains not one of Mirza’s quotes are supporting honor killings and thus rendering his quoting irrelevant. I get the feeling Mirza knew this too, sadly he was not too quick to come forward and admit this.

To give Mirza further food for thought we can add comments from Sheikh Muhammad Al-Hanooti:

“In Islam, there is no place for unjustifiable killing. Even in case of capital punishment, only the government can apply the law through the judicial procedures. No one has the authority to execute the law other than the officers who are in charge.” [1]

Note: “Honor” is an American spelling, the English spelling is “honour”, and I have endeavoured to use the American spelling as Mirza used the American spelling despite my preference of the English spelling.

The Critics Accuse the Quran of promoting Honour Killings

Lately, honour killings have been brought to the fore in the media (UK),the victims of honour killings generally tend to be females who have deemed to have dishonoured their family by a sexual indiscretion (perceived or actual) or by dating. Interestingly enough, honour killings affect the West as well as the East. It is a world-wide problem where family members essentially murder their relatives by acting as judge, jury and executioner.

The unfortunate thing for Muslims is that this blight on society (honour killings) have been attributed to the Quran or Islam while other communities who also suffer from the problem of honour killings (ie Hindus, Sikhs etc) do not have the added problem of over-zealous critics pointing at their religion or religious book. The Muslims have to contend with these unfair critics.
The facts of the matter are that hononour killings are not Islamic as highlighted by Sheikh Ahmad Kutty:
